Depends on location and wall size. Granite areas (New England): Usually optional for walls under 2.5m. Basalt soils (Northern Rivers, Southern Highlands): Rarely needed—excellent quality. Unknown soils or variable terrain: Recommended. Reactive clay areas (Western slopes): Recommended for walls over 1.5m. Coastal areas: Essential for acid sulfate soil risk assessment. Testing particularly worthwhile when soil quality is uncertain—prevents over-design or under-design.

We work from: high-quality photos you take on your phone, Google Earth satellite and street view, council zoning and contour maps, and video calls if needed. You measure key dimensions, we handle the engineering. Only very complex sites require actual site visits.
Large areas of regional NSW are bushfire-prone. Bushfire Attack Level (BAL) ratings determine material requirements: BAL-Low to BAL-19: Most materials acceptable (timber OK with treatment). BAL-29 to BAL-40: Non-combustible materials (concrete, masonry, steel). BAL-FZ (Flame Zone): Must be non-combustible with specific detailing. We design to your property's BAL rating—council often provides this or we can help determine it.
Tablelands, Snowy Mountains, and alpine areas experience ground frost. Footing depth must extend below frost penetration depth (typically 450-600mm in Armidale, 600-900mm in Cooma/Jindabyne). We account for this in design—prevents frost heave which can crack walls and displace footings.
Varies enormously by location: Rock/granite sites (New England, Snowy): 600-1,000mm if bearing on sound rock. Basalt soils (Northern Rivers, Southern Highlands): 800-1,200mm—excellent soils. Reactive clays (Western slopes): 1.5-2.5x wall height. Coastal sands: 1.0-1.5m minimum, may need wider footings. Alluvial river flats: Variable, testing recommended. For walls purely in paddocks away from structures, requirements vary by council but most still require engineering for safety and liability reasons.
