Reactive Clay: Most of Canberra sits on highly reactive clay soils (Class H to E). Seasonal moisture variation causes significant ground movement — deep footings with moisture barriers essential for all retaining walls.

Cold Climate: Canberra regularly experiences -5°C to -8°C winters with frost penetration to 400–600mm. Footings must be below frost line. Freeze-thaw cycles affect exposed masonry and drainage systems.

Rocky Ground: Parts of Canberra (especially south side — Woden, Tuggeranong) have shallow rock. Excavation can be expensive and footings may need rock anchoring.

Bushfire Zones: Canberra's urban-bushland interface means many properties are in bushfire-prone areas (BAL ratings). Retaining walls near buildings may need to comply with AS 3959 bushfire construction requirements.

NCA Planning: Some Canberra areas fall under National Capital Authority jurisdiction rather than ACT Planning, creating different approval pathways. We design for both.
